No on Proposition 98, Yes on Proposition 99
May 7th, 2008
To Supporters of Ventura Citizens for Hillside Preservation:
The VCHP Board of Directors has voted unanimously to Oppose Prop. 98 and Support Prop. 99. They will be on the June 3rd ballot.
Prop. 98: (NO)
* The mission of VCHP, to protect the hills and canyons of Ventura from over-development, would be difficult because Prop. 98 would wreck havoc on local land-use planning and environmental protections. It would prohibit countless laws that protect our land, air, & water.
It would also prohibit property acquisitions for public water projects.
* Prop. 98 would abolish rent control and gut renter protection laws. Roughly 75% of money behind Prop. 98 comes from apartment & mobile home park owners seeking to quash rent-control.
* A few of the people/groups who oppose Prop. 98: National Wildlife Federation & 25 more environmental groups, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, AARP, CA Chamber of Commerce, League of Women Voters, CA Police Chiefs Association, and Association of CA Water Agencies.
Prop. 99: (YES) — The Homeowners Protection Act
* It will prohibit the government from using eminent domain to take a home to transfer to a private developer. Since the 2005 Supreme Court decision that allows government to take private property & give it to a developer, 40 states have acted to close the loop hole. Now CA needs to act and pass Prop. 99 to protect the homeowner.
* Prop. 99 is supported by a broad coalition of homeowners, business, labor, cities, counties and environmentalists who want straightforward eminent domain reform.
* Prop. 99 is supported by groups such as: The Sierra Club, League of CA Homeowners, League of Women Voters, CA Alliance for Retired Americans, CA Police Chiefs Association and Sen. Dianne Feinstein & Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
